More than half of Tennesseans support more charter school funding
One in five voters unsure of view on issue
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (April 19, 2016) — According to a recent study conducted by financial services firm WalletHub comparing public school systems across the U.S., the Tennessee school system ranked 26th out of 50 overall for quality in 2015.
Amid requests from school administrators and local officials across the state for reforms to the school funding process, leading civic technology solution icitizen conducted a poll of Tennessee voters on this issue.
Results revealed that, overall, a slight majority (53%) support expanded funding to charter schools, which receive government funding but operate independently of the public school system, with 24% who support this “strongly.” This is compared to 26% who oppose expanding charter school funding, including 11% who “strongly oppose” and 15% who oppose “not so strongly” (21% unsure).
“This support is consistent across age, party, race, and region — including a majority of young, non-white and West Tennessee residents who are supportive of expanding funding for charter schools,” said icitizen Polling Analyst Cynthia Villacis.
“While the majority view is a narrow one at 53%, supporters of expanded charter school funding have a larger cohort of passionate believers,” said icitizen Director of Research and Polling Dr. Mark Keida. “About one quarter of Tennesseans (24%) strongly support expanding funding, compared to just 11% who strongly oppose — that is better than a 2:1 margin on intensity.”
icitizen conducted a survey of 513 registered Tennessee voters age 18+. The survey was conducted from April 1-4, 2016. Data were balanced by age, gender and region to reflect the composition of registered voters in Tennessee. The survey was conducted online with commercial opt-in sample. The margin of error for the full sample is +/- 4.3, and higher for subgroups. Results were rounded to the nearest point.
