Voters divided on income tax proposals
Plurality supports current system; flat tax close behind
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (April 14, 2016) — Presidential candidates have debated the possibility of replacing the current tax system with a flat tax. This would subject all citizens to the same tax rate, regardless of income.
A new poll conducted by leading civic technology company icitizen found that among statewide registered voters, 42% prefer the current system, 36% prefer the flat tax and 22% are unsure about their tax system preference.
“Fully 54% of registered voters who identify as Democrats and 52% of liberals support the current system of taxation, compared to about a quarter who prefer a flat tax,” said icitizen Director of Research and Polling Dr. Mark Keida. “Running counter, the plurality (41%) of Republican registered voters prefer the flat tax, with 38% who favor the current system and 21% who are unsure. The high number of ‘unsure’ respondents (21% of both Democrats and Republicans) demonstrates how much this debate is open for conversation.”
Consistent with the partisan split, among Donald Trump supporters, the plurality (46%) prefer the flat tax (37% say they support the current system and 17% say they are unsure). Conversely, among Hillary Clinton supporters, a majority (54%) favors maintaining the current system, as opposed to only 23% who favor the flat tax.
Additionally, a plurality of 40% of white (non-hispanic) voters support the existing tax system. However, among non-white registered voters, 51% favor the current system of taxation, as opposed to the 22% who favor the flat tax (27% are unsure).
icitizen conducted a survey of 513 registered Tennessee voters, age 18+. The survey was conducted from April 1-4, 2016. Data were balanced by age, gender and region to reflect the composition of registered voters in Tennessee. The survey was conducted online among icitizen users and supplemented with an opt-in online sample. The margin of error for the full sample is +/- 4.3, and higher for subgroups.
